IS I.V. ACETAMINOPHEN REALLY SUPERIOR TO OTHER MODES OF ANALGESIA?

By Marvin Finnefrock

Multimodal analgesia comprises several options, including acetaminophen, nonsteroidal ant inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS), opioids and GABA analogs.  These are just few items we have in our analgesic tool kit.  Besides the fact that we now have more choices than ever to treat our patient’s pain, we also have several modes of administration.  We should consider the less invasive mode that is most comfortable to our patients and offers the best cost profile.

This month Dr. Andrew Lowe has offered some commentary to this very issue as he reply’s to Apfel et al and their article in the American Journal of Health-System Pharmacy 2015; 72: 1961-8.  Dr. Lowes letter can be found in the American Journal of Health-System Pharmacy, June 15th 2016 73: 12 pg. 862.

Simply stated, does the route make for the outcome?  What do you think?
