Antimicrobial Efforts Reduce Antibiotic Spend by 75%

In 2014, a short-term acute care hospital operating over 350 staffed beds and nearly 300 Medicare-certified beds tracked antimicrobial spend greater than $20 per adjusted patient day (PAPD). To reduce this number, hospital leaders reached out to Comprehensive Pharmacy Services (CPS) regarding the CPS Antimicrobial Stewardship Program.

The CPS team created a strategy that included:

  • Developing a dedicated Antimicrobial (ABX) Steering Committee
  • Establishing shared committee goals
  • Developing proprietary resources to encourage ABX success
  • Constructing antibiogram reviews discussing ABX sensitivities to bacteria

Beginning with the 2014 ABX spend at greater than $20/PAPD, CPS Antimicrobial teams were able to reduce the spend to $5.27/PAPD by February 2021. This represents an ABX spend decrease of approximately 75%.
